Which holster is the one for me?

04/24/2024

Choosing the right holster can be a daunting task. With the thousands of options available, narrowing down the search can be difficult. Here are some of our top considerations when shopping for holsters:

OWB or IWB?

Are you mainly going to carry Outside the WaistBand (OWB) or Inside the WaistBand (IWB)? Consider your wardrobe when carrying, and whether you are concealing or open carrying. For example, if you want to carry concealed during the winter, it may be easier and more comfortable to use an OWB holster and throw on a large coat.

Kydex, Leather, or combo?

Certain holster materials may feel more comfortable to you than others. Kydex may feel too sweaty, but leather may feel stifling during the summer. How comfortable does it feel when you're moving around?

Daily activities

Will this holster accomodate the activities you plan to do throughout the day? For example, if you're more athletic, you might consider holsters that have stronger hooks that grab onto your clothing.

Printing

Does the holster work with your wardrobe? Can people tell if you're carrying a gun? If you reach around or bend down, will people see your gun? Does it have extra parts to prevent printing? Will you be able to accommodate your clothing to your holster (i.e. larger pants so you can fit your holster, looser shirts to cover your gun)?

Retention

There are three common retention levels. Level 1 holds the gun in the holster by fitting around it, whereas level 2 has an additional mechanism that needs to be disabled before the gun can be removed from the holster. Level 3 holsters have two additional mechanisms to remove the gun (i.e. a button and a strap over the top of the holster). Extra retention theoretically increases the time for you to remove the gun from the holster. Ideally, your gun does not fall out of the holster when you hold it upside down and shake it lightly.

This is not an exhaustive list of all the considerations to make when choosing your next holster, but these are our first thoughts when shopping. Keep in mind, you will most likely spend more money on holsters than the cost of the gun. Some holsters that work for certain people may not work for you.
